RTP has an exact meaning, and it is the loose version of that meaning that causes most of the confusion around it.

Nothing about a single session is guaranteed by RTP, since it is a product of the game’s maths. In plain terms, a 96% RTP is a design target: millions of spins, never just hundreds, and 96 units come back per 100 wagered. The remaining 4 is the house edge. A casino offering the game generally cannot alter it, because the studio sets it when building the game.

The common misreading

The misreading goes like this: with a 96% RTP, a player is said to get 96% of their money back over an evening. It does not. Only across a volume of play beyond any individual does the long-run average assert itself, and in short sessions variance dominates instead. Both results are possible, losing the entire stake on a 98% game and finishing ahead on a 94% one, and neither says anything about how accurate the figures are.

Not a guarantee, not a payout schedule, not a measure of how often a game pays: that describes what RTP is not. You get the same rating whether a game returns 96% through rare enormous wins or through constant small ones, even though they feel nothing alike. That second property amounts to volatility, and it comes with a separate number.

A worked example

The arithmetic is worth doing once. Stake ₱10 on each of 500 spins at 96% RTP and the total turnover is ₱5,000; the expected return of ₱4,800 leaves an expected loss of ₱200. Yet the actual result can differ a lot from that figure, as 500 spins is a tiny sample, and high volatility makes the difference bigger. The expectation tells you where the distribution is centred, not what you will see.

Using it in practice

RTP belongs in a comparison between games, not in a comparison with how you personally did. A one-point RTP difference does matter across a catalogue, though it is invisible across a session. Ask where the figure is sourced too; quote RTP that a studio publishes on its own game pages; do not quote a number that comparison sites pass between themselves with no primary source.
